The World Food Programme (WFP) today called for support for Haiti as it issued a new report that shows that 5.8 million Haitians — 52 per cent of the population — continue to face acute food insecurity. WFP needs $332 million to maintain its crucial operations over the next 12 months.

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is monitoring the situation in the Pyla plateau, where peacekeepers have stepped up patrols and are maintaining a visible presence on the ground, following the observation of unauthorized entry by Turkish Cypriot security personnel into the United Nations buffer zone.

UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher has allocated $48 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund to maintain aid operations of the UN Humanitarian Air Service, run by the World Food Programme, in Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Kenya, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan and Syria.

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said in a report today that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has come to a near halt, with a 95 per cent drop in daily ship transits over the past month, according to UNCTAD report released today. UNCTAD forecasts a drop in world GDP to about 2.6 per cent by the end of the year.

In Haiti, a UN report details the human rights impact of violence perpetrated by gangs, security forces, private contractors and self-defence groups. According to UN-verified data, at least 5,519 people were killed and 2,608 injured between 1 March 2025 and 15 January 2026.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) today issued a report detailing unrelenting violence against human rights defenders in Colombia over the past decade, with an average of just under 100 killed every year. The High Commissioner for Human Rights stressed that the structural causes of this tragedy must be addressed.

The Secretary-General’s report on measures for protection from sexual exploitation and abuse covering 2025 has been issued. It notes that addressing sexual exploitation and abuse requires a collective commitment to tackling root causes, including inequality and power imbalances within and beyond our institutions.

Many civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure were reported in Ukraine following continued drone and missile attacks over the weekend and early this morning. UN agencies are supporting aid organizations.

In Iran, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says it is deeply concerned about the deadly impact the ongoing military escalation is having on children there. Approximately 180 children have reportedly been killed and many more injured.
