On August 6, 1988, Oakland Athletics outfielder Jose Canseco became the eleventh player in major league history to hit thirty home runs and steal thirty bases during a season. Canseco, with thirty-one home runs, stole second base with one out during the ninth inning for his thirtieth as the A's edged the Seattle Mariners 5 - 4.
