Intergovernmental Advisory Committee | Federal Communications Commission

Our Mission

To provide aid to the Commission on the many telecommunications issues affecting local, state and Tribal governments that are within the jurisdiction of the FCC.

The IAC, originally known as the Local and State Government Advisory Committee (LSGAC), was established in 1997. Since then, we've been committed to facilitating intergovernmental communications. In 2003, we embraced a new identity as the IAC and fine-tuned our rules to better serve our diverse community.

On December 13, 2017, the FCC expanded the IAC from 15 to 30 members, allowing us to better represent all relevant governmental entities and sectors. This expansion ensures we offer comprehensive and balanced input that reflects the diverse views and expertise of our regulatory partners.

Who We Are

The IAC is composed of dedicated elected officials from municipal, county, state, and Tribal governments. We operate on two-year terms, with each term kicking off at our first meeting.

What We Do

The FCC Chairman may task the IAC with specific projects to further the Commission's mission and goals. Our duties include:

  • Providing expert guidance to the Commission
  • Gathering and analyzing data and information
  • Aiding the agency with outreach initiatives
  • Performing essential analyses to address pressing questions and matters

To tackle these tasks effectively, we may establish dynamic working groups.

Read the IAC's reports and recommendations.

Non-FACA

Because our members are elected officials or their designated employees, the IAC enjoys a streamlined, non-FACA advisory committee status. This means our meetings are closed to the public, allowing us to work efficiently and effectively.
